SHARP METAL INVADES JAPAN

In a mystery that's got everyone baffled (even the normally reliable "authorities") 24,000 pieces of sharp metal have been found stuck in roadside guardrails all over Japan.

The Asahi newspaper says: "Why are such objects, so many of them, all over the country? If they had been intentionally installed, it's a serious crime."

But what is the crime? No one can figure it out. Are devious teens hoping people will stumble into these knife-like objects and be lightly scratched? Are they actually small, sharp metal aliens who have invaded but don't know what to do next? The Land and Transport Ministry has vowed to get to the bottom of this, but chances are we'll really never know.

It's probably related to maintaining the incredibly high level of redundant roadwork for the upcoming roadwork season (aka summer).

I walked into an office building today and when I came out three hours later the sidewalk was ripped up and the building was surrounded by day-glo pylons, green tarpaulin, humming generators and the requisite twice-as-many-more-construction-workers-than-necessary holding glowing crimson batons. "War of the Worlds" has got nothing on these crews.

But that's officially sanctioned roadwork. No one knows where these sharp pieces of metal came from, and no glowing crimson batons were involved in their dispersal.

Although, my favorite Japanese device is the police mannequin with a robot arm that I once saw protecting some roadwork.
