WHERE'S LAU CHING-WAN? HERE'S LAU CHING-WAN!

Lau Ching-wan might star in Danny Boyle's sci-fi pic SUNSHINELau Ching-wan is one of Hong Kong's best actors, but he's been MIA for a couple of years.

Now the City on Fire message boards are saying that he's turned up on the potential cast list for Danny Boyle's sci fi flick SUNSHINE, along with Ken Watanabe and THE RING's Hiroyuki Sanada.

Fun facts:
- Hiroyuki Sanada is the action star who was in such 80's Hong Kong classics as ROYAL WARRIORS and NINJA IN THE DRAGON'S DEN and sci fi fare like MESSAGE FROM SPACE.

- The movie is about a space mission to the sun, making it the first feature film to ever be based on a Polack joke.

What are you talking about absent for a couple of years? He did the big hit/bad flick Himalaya Singh this Chinese New Year, and 5 films in 2004 which were big HK releases -- Fantasia for one.

You're right. I guess I miss Lau Ching-wan the actor, as opposed to Lau Ching-wan the improvising comedian we've been getting. As much as I enjoyed MY LEFT EYE SEES GHOSTS and FAT CHOI SPIRIT, I wish there was some meat to what he's doing these days. Derek Yee's LOST IN TIME was the only movie I've seen in a while that looks like it had a budget and a brain and Lau Ching-wan.

My problem with a lot of the comedies he's been doing (besides my problem with HIMALAYA SINGH which is just awful) is that they're cheap and look rushed. DRIVING MISS CRAZY was charming at times, but looked like it had been made on a rainy Sunday afternoon when everyone was bored.

So, you're right, he has been making movies. But the movie's he's been making since 2001 (he didn't make anything in 2000 it looks like) are cheap and quick productions, except for 2 movies.

Thanks for the correction.

"DRIVING MISS CRAZY". LOL! Was that a deliberate typo there?!
