WEINSTEINS RE-EDIT TOM YUM GOONG

TOM YUM GOONG will be re-edited for the Western marketWiseKwai has it from reliable sources that TOM YUM GOONG will be re-edited for the Western market. Director Prachya Pinkaew is supposedly involved in the re-editing which will take out Thai "in jokes" and maybe tone down some of the bone-crunching sound effects.

TOM YUM GOONG was picked up by the Weinstein Company (the new outfit run by Miramax's Bob and Harvey Weinstein) who, presumably, asked for the re-edit. This comes as no surprise to anyone who's familiar with the Weinstein's treatment of movies in the past.

It's actually not the Weinsteins who asked for this, it was the sales agent TF1 ...

Ah, but it's more fun to blame the Weinsteins. Why blame the French when you blame the ex-Miram-Ax men?

This news really annoys me. The movie is already watered down for international tastes, so they are going to clip and snip what few vestiges of authentic Thainess it had left. But hey, as long as everyone involved makes money. And as long as Tony Jaa is doing his thing, audiences won't know the difference, right?

In the meantime, I understand the Hong Kong release of the DVD is due out sometime in the next two or three months, most likely with English subs.

The date I saw for the HK DVD was November 1st, but all references to that have magically disappeared ... I think TF1 may have got them to delay it until the international roll out, but I hope not. I'll be getting the HK disc, regardless, because it'll have the original cut ...

Same here. I'll get the DVD, and I wouldn't mind checking it out in the theater so long as they refrain from adding "Kung Fu Fighting" to the soundtrack. Simps! Rapscallions! Neer-do-wells! A pox be upon you!

Thanks for the correction. Sorry to blame the Weinsteins when it's someone else asking for re-edits. This just smacks of them so I leapt to the conclusion. Thanks for keeping me on the straight and narrow.

Apparently "The Protector" is getting a theatrical release after all. www.boxofficemojo.com reports that they registered November 10th as for a theatrical release for the hopefully-not-too-butchered cut of Tom Yum Goong. The same site broke the news that Fearless was getting a Summer release, so this is probably legit.

Don't expect the relase date to hold if Fearless tanks though, we've all been through this song and dance before with those guys.
