WHAT'S HAPPENING TO THE US RELEASE OF THE PROMISE?
So most of the big deal holiday movies have already announced their release dates and press screenings. I know when the screenings are of KING KONG, MUNICH, CASANOVA pretty much all the big flicks. But as for Chen Kaige's THE PROMISE, I haven't heard a word. Supposedly it'll be released world wide on Dec. 16 by the Weinstein Company, but it's getting late to put together a press push.
I also noticed that the Weinstein Co. held a test screening of the movie last night at the Loews on 11th Street in NYC. The movie now seems to be officially called MASTER OF THE CRIMSON ARMOR and they managed to round up a big bunch of folks for the screening. If you were there, I'd love to hear from you.
Still, it's a little late to do a test screening, especially if you decide to make changes.
It looks to me like someone's getting cold feet.

Geee. The Weinstein's screw up the release of an Asian film? What are the odds?

I was holding judgement about TWC until I see how they handle the release of this. Even though I was -hoping- for nothing that would be old hat, it seems old habits are hard to break. Perfect. Now I wonder about, what was it, Mongol that they scooped up at Cannes too..because I was looking forward to being able to catch that.
Vive la ability to view import DVDs.

I know I'm the one engaging in a little yellow journalism here, but I just wanted to say that it's still too early to judge too harshly.
Early indicators aren't good, but I recommend that everyone, myself included, get into classic "wait and see" position. I do have a bad feeling about this, however, and wanted to say something now so I can "I told you so" later.

They got Mongol!?! DAMN! DAMN! DAMN!

Grady: I know what you mean. Loved to be proven wrong, would -really- loved to be proven wrong.
Todd: They got either that or another flick that sounds really similar to me. Hang on, I found it, Nomad. They got Nomad at Cannes...new flick with Mark Dacascos and Jason Scott Lee.

Okay, I don't feel bad about them getting Nomad. The trailer that came out for that one looked pretty bad. Considering Mongol shares a producer with Crouching Tiger and House of Flying Daggers I'd be pretty surprised if it didn't go to Sony.

Have any of you seen any footage of THE PROMISE? Have seen the show reel which was produced for and shown at Cannes. Sorry, but it looked like absolute and utter cack.

There are some comments on IMDb board from the people who watched it. Overall, surprisingly positive reviews from most reviewers (with a few negative ones).
Over in China, they are doing a huge campaign on this movie. A quite interesting Hiroyuki's interview on Chinese TV about the movie (cows, meat, and Chen Kaige's drinking ability etc..) is posted on Hiroyuki Sanada Enthusiast website.

I wish someday Hiroyuki do this on Jay Leno here in the U.S.
