SHOCHIKU IS SAMURAI COUNTRY

Japan's Shochiku studios has found big success with Yoji Yamada's TWILIGHT SAMURAI and THE HIDDEN BLADE, and now they've got Yamada locked away shooting his third samurai flick, ONE-LINE SAMURAI.

But the bigger news is that they've convinced Hirokazu Kore-eda to direct a samurai film. The director of "After Life" and "Nobody Knows" is currently shooting his period samurai movie, HANA YORI MO NAHO, and it will be released in Spring 2006. The stars are Rie Miyazawa and Tadanobu Asano.

"Hana yori mo naho" is getting a high expectation, not only with the director Kore-eda but also the line-up of proven actors. In the meantime, people speculate what will happen to Yamada's "One-Line Samurai", because of the star Takuya Kimura (the "J-drama" king and starred in "2046"). Kimura reportedly refused to go to out-of-town locations, to accommodate his weekly TV shooting schedules, and so Yamada is confined to shoot in the studios and nearby locations from Tokyo (not in Kyoto as he did in the past 2 movies). I, for one, cannot imagine Kimura in samurai costumes... I wonder what Yamada-san was thinking...
