I'm back in Thailand after a break in the States. Hope to get back in gear with the Thai Film Journal. In the meantime, here's one of the few reviews of The Promise I can find. From the Electric New Paper in Singapore, it's pretty cheeky.

The film opened in China today and the reviews are pouring in. A Japanese blog writer (lives in China) says that the focus is cleverly distributed to all the 6 main cast and is hard to tell who is the "main" character. Yet the screen time is enough for all of them, so the fans of each actor/actress in different countries can be satisfied. (Michi: Very interesting strategy. So all the fans in China, Hong Kong, Korea and Japan are happy.) Beautiful, well acted, well constructed, but sometimes a bit hard to get the story line because it is too much "loaded".
Regarding the US schedule, Chinese news says that Director Chen Kaige said in an interview that the U.S. wider release (in addition to this LA limited screening) will be in February 2006. Now that "The Promise" is nominated in Golden Globe, they should be gearing up for a little P.R. activities by now.
