BANQUET DIRECTOR CALLS A SPADE A SPADE
Feng Xiaogang, the director of the upcoming period action flick, THE BANQUET, gives an interview to Yahoo which is worth reading. But the real meat comes when he points out the obvious:
"Some Westerners said they didn't really understand it [his film, BIG SHOT'S FUNERAL which flopped in the US]. In reality, I think they didn't get it because of a feeling of cultural superiority. I don't believe Westerners don't understand that kind of humor, they didn't want to understand. It seems like Western audiences have an easier time accepting Asian stories set in ancient times. That's a reality. I don't think it's a good thing, but for me, I wanted to make that kind of change."
At least he's not pretending he's making this movie because he wants to - he's making it because he wants a hit.

Interesting. I thought "Big Shot's Funeral" was extremely funny, especially towards the end when it deals with advertising. Almost died by laughing too much when they discussed how to get sponsors' products on the "corpse".

I agree that BIG SHOT'S FUNERAL was very funny. I think it was poorly marketed as a Chinese film for the art crowd when, as the article said, most of Feng's movies are for the masses. I've seen quite a few of them with Ge You, a wonderful actor, who often plays an average guy just trying to get by. Feng's movies & Ge's roles are funny, satirical, poignant & highly enjoyable. I wish more were available on DVD with English subtitles.
