HURRICANE WONG KAR-WAI

Wong Kar-wai is reportedly interested in making a movie about the Hurrican Katrina disaster in the US, and is interested in Adrien Brody as the star. However, the script still isn't finished.

I'm filing this in the "wait and see" department since WKW first has to finish LADY FROM SHANGHAI with Nicole Kidman, and then the bio-pic about Bruce Lee's master with Tony Leung Chiu-wai.

But still, sometimes I like to sit and dreamily imagine all those step-printed, smudged frames of people hacking their way onto their rooftops to wait out the floodwaters, and the gorgeously lit images of Ray Nagin shouting at folks on the telephone that are bound to show up in the picture. No one does rain, sweat and tears better than WKW and by all accounts Hurrican Katrina had plenty of all three.

Assuming those films haven't been put on the back-burner, which is hardly unlikely -- IIRC shooting on 2046 was pushed back a year or two past the original start date because of various difficulties with the actors' schedules.

Incidentally, Rachel Weisz said at the Golden Globes that she would be shooting an unnamed film with Wong and that she wouldn't have to hide her pregnancy for the role (meaning her part would have to be shot within the next few months, since she's due in May). The media assumed she meant The Lady from Shanghai, but in light of this new info, I wonder if she was actually talking about the Katrina project.

I have to assume it's the LADY FROM SHANGHAI project. I just can't imagine WKW has it together yet to shoot anything for the Katrina project, and I heard he was in NYC several months ago scouting Chinatown locations for LADY (this was before Katrina).

On the other hand, this is the guy who wrote, shot and released CHUNGKING EXPRESS in about 30 days so you never know.

Perhaps, but Wong's supposedly visited New Orleans on multiple occasions (both before and after Katrina, from what I understand), so this project may have been gestating for awhile. I'll follow Wong anywhere, but I have to admit this sounds more intriguing than what little we know of The Lady from Shanghai -- so I do have a somewhat selfish motive in hoping this wild speculation pans out...
