KRISSH POSTER

Krrish poster

Summer 2006's big Bollywood movie is the superhero flick KRRISH starring Hrithik Roshan and with action by Hong Kong's Ching Siu-tung. I've been disappointed by Bollywood so many times recently that I feel stupid getting excited about a Bollywood movie, but like a deranged version of Pollyanna all I have to do is stare at my rainbow maker for long enough and I start to get all smiley and bubbly over KRRISH as if EK AJNABEE, TAXI NO. 9211, ZINDA, FIGHT CLUB, SWADES, VEER ZAARA and BUNTI AUR BUBLI never happened.

Oh, look, it's the KRISSH poster!

(Thanks to Naachgaana for this one)

I can't get too excited. It's a sequel to Koi ... mil gaya which was a pretty weak and sappy ET knockoff to begin with. Preity Zinta was the best thing about it, and she's not in the sequel. Not a big Hrithik Roshan fan either - such a pretty boy.

Posted by: David Austin | Mar 17, 2006 9:36:02 AM

Sorry to burst people's bubble but this one's going to be a spiderman clone. Its being touted as bollywood's first superhero movie. Hrithik Roshan went to LA to do all the wirework and mo-cap. It's about damn time someone in India made money from the superhero genre, even if they're setting themselves up for a lawsuit from marvel.
But then again...

Posted by: anangbhai | Mar 17, 2006 7:44:18 PM

Bollywood's first superhero movie? Are they totally ignoring Mr. India? Someone should have greenlit a sequel to that, instead of this junk.

Posted by: David Austin | Mar 19, 2006 4:14:06 PM

Actually, there have been rumors of a remake of Mr. India for quite some time. Shekhar Kapur also commented on it recently and he said he was fine with a sequel or a remake.
I don't know if the camp filled nature of Mr India could be replicated with today's actors who are more interested in their hairstyles and of course Amrish Puri as Mugambo is irreplaceable. Not even Nana can take his place.
Then again, Sholay is also being remade, so why not ruin another watershed film in Indian cinema with more song and dance bullshit.

Posted by: anangbhai | Mar 19, 2006 9:53:38 PM

I agree that a remake probably couldn't capture the innocence and fun of the original. The time to have made a sequel was right after the first one. Amrish Puri is definitely irreplaceable, though perhaps Sridevi could be tempted to take the stage again. I don't know if I can see Anil Kapoor as goofy anymore after his Musafir performance (didn't like the movie, but I thought he did a good job).

hrithik as usual would ask as mentally upset guy like in koi mil gaya or main prem ki deewani hoon.so nothing so special about the film.just a desi version of spiderman or batman.koi mil gaya was also copy of ET

Posted by: mita | Apr 10, 2006 5:40:06 AM

Ok, I really hate to correct everyone here but I am getting tired of all this "knock-off" talk. First: Koi...mil gaya is NOT a rip off of ET. The Oscar winning Indian cinematographer Satyajit Ray wrote a screenplay about a lost alien back in the late '60s (in fact, there has been talk that Spielberg ripped HIM off). Whether or not Roshan utilized this screenplay for his work is immaterial as it establishes precedent in the Indian context and thus not merely derivative of American film. Second: Marvel comics has had an Indian Spiderman comic set in Mumbai for a couple of years now and are undoubtedly involved in the financial talks about making a Bollywood version of the film starring Shah Rukh Khan. Therefore, Krrish can hardly be called a 'rip-off' of that film. Third: The new Sholay is NOT a remake - it will be re-telling of the story set in a completely different setting and highlighting the ideas, values and concepts that made the first version the biggest film hit of the 20th century. Finally, Hrithik Roshan's film persona has been described as the "quintessential transnational cosmopolitan, who can navigate multiple cultural spaces with consummate ease, Hrithik's character is, in fact, an embodiment of a 'super-Indian', whose Indianness transcends both that of the resident and non-resident Indian" (International Journal of Cultural Studies 8/2:2005). Therefore, as the Singaporean based NRI in the film Krissh, Hrithik's superhero character will represent a kind of supra-international, hyper-realized South Asian whose colloquial "Indianess" is traded in for a universal post-human subjectivity. If Krrish turns out to be a hit (and I believe it will) it will be as much due to these factors as merely riding on the coat-tails of another famous film.

hi everyone ,
whatever mita has wrriten der it'z really true. And i'm not tryin to be mean butt krissh's gonna be super dupper hit of 2006. Watch...........!

Posted by: hitesh | Apr 13, 2006 7:23:59 AM

So let me see if I have this straight. Koi... Mil Gaya isn't a rip-off of the world famous E.T. because there's an unproduced screenplay somewhere that sort of resembles E.T.? (Cats have four legs. My dog has four legs. Therefore my dog is a cat.)

To be fair, you also say Koi... Mil Gaya isn't a rip-off of E.T. because of the "Indian context." Uh huh. Next you'll be saying Jung isn't a rip-off of Desperate Measures and Face/Off. I mean, look at the Indian context! It's all set in India and stuff, and the bad guy has a good-hearted girlfriend!

To be even fairer, though, Koi Mil Gaya isn't a rip-off of E.T. It's a rip-off of E.T. (the alien that can do magic), Charly (retarded guy gets smarter, then dumber), Close Encounters of the Third Kind (the spaceship, alien signal is music), Spider-Man (the scene where Rohit gets muscles), and Flubber (the basketball game).

Posted by: scott | Apr 13, 2006 10:16:43 AM

Will Hrithik Roshan be more of a "supra-international, hyper-realized South Asian" than Anil Kapoor was in Mr. India? I think not.

"The new Sholay is NOT a remake - it will be re-telling of the story set in a completely different setting and highlighting the ideas, values and concepts that made the first version the biggest film hit of the 20th century."

I'm confused.

Posted by: David Austin | Apr 14, 2006 6:32:47 AM

Why do people crib about rip-offs?
Look at how technology in indian cinema is taking leaps.
So what if its a rip off.
These movies do provide the fun and entertainment which a cine goer is looking forward for.
I mean why do we watch movies? is it to see if the movie is a rip off? OR is it to have some nice entertainment.

I am sure all guys who are so worried and so agitated about rip offs like Koi Mil Gaya have watched the movie and sat through the whole movie

Please appreciate the efforts taken by the film industry to entertain us rather than making useless comparisons.

Posted by: arun | Apr 18, 2006 1:13:45 AM

I don't know about you, but I'm more entertained by a film if it isn't a collection of scenes copied from other movies I've already seen. Koi... Mil Gaya wasn't just a rip-off of the idea of E.T., but practically a restraging of the most famous scenes from E.T. All the other examples I mentioned above were also shot-by-shot steals from other movies. As a moviegoer, I think I deserve more.

Posted by: Scott | Apr 18, 2006 6:49:42 AM

I sat through all of Koi ... Mil Gaya. My problem with it has less to do with it being a knockoff (it uses a lot less of ET then, say, Kaante uses of The Usual Suspects, and more to do with the fact that it really failed to be entertaining, Preity Zinta aside.

The troubling problem is that Bollywood knockoffs tend to be less entertaining than Bollywood originals, for the same reason that Hollywood knockoffs tend to be less entertaining - they are usually hack-work with no heart or creativity. There are certainly exceptions (I though the Ramsay Bros Ghungroo Ki Awaz was a great remake of Diabolique) but generally a remake is a red flag that a movie is more likely to suck, like Koi...Mil Gaya, Zinda, or Musafir.

Posted by: David Austin | Apr 18, 2006 10:08:13 AM

Well let me give you all a completely different perspective seen from an eyes of a 2 year old. Rip off or not Koi mil gaya is a damn good entertainement. It has good music, a funny character called "jadoo" and lovely characterisation. So much so that she was able to live through one month of isolation in a hospital ICU without her parents only by watching this movie on her small personal DVD player. I bet none of you or any other movie maker can beat that. Hope "Krrish" can work the same magic. Time everyone stopped being a suedo and appreciated everything without putting any personal agendas or barrier

cheers

lets face it ppl hollywood is the master of rip offs and if u keep pointin out the fact dat bollywood gets there second well dats no surprise seeing as to how we indians in general have a "tum jao main aata/aati hoon" complex so if u are gnna be critics of bollywood cinema and it being rip offs well get a degree in film study or atleast understand that no screenplay is ever an original idea. Look beyond your noses and u will c dat almost all da great litraturs frm dickens to shakespeare borrow simillar elements in terms of plot and genre. However i am not gnna make excuses bollywood is in lazy hands yes it has made great progress in da last sorta five years and thnk god dat they finally decided to rid themselves of the going behind a tree at the end of a song to symbolise sex As far as i can see there is no harm in borrowing elements frm other movies but to recreate exact scenes hmmm. sme fat old men need a right kick on their bomboclots as da jamaicans would say

Though Koi mil gaya was technically sound it was more childish.
As Ching Siu-tung has directed the stunt sequences, we can expect some good action. But dont hope much otherwise you will be let down

“I'm confused”

The new RGV Sholay will be set in modern day Mumbai, w/ Gabbar as a mob boss and Jai/Veeru as 2 convicted felons.

as for Krissh, it looks like yet another crap bolly-remake along the lines of Bluffmaster, Taxi 9211, Kaante and Zinda.

Posted by: Victor | May 28, 2006 1:50:43 PM

Hey guys dont crib so much its entertainment and thats wat matters. If think of ripoffs the biggest is hollywood , it rips from almost all filmindustries in the world.Cleverly changed.

Hrithik is challenging the idea of indian hero and also challenging the Hollywood, if there is one actor who can give tom cruise run for money from hollywood its hrithik from bollywood, try tom cruise dance like him and act like our stars in bollywood movies they will almost all of them look funny if not ridiculous. You know why they dont have dance in movies because none of their stars can dance. And the star that dances 'jlo' cant act.Show me one hollywood flick which can carry off songs with ease and grace.

Coming to hrithik, anybody seen him in lakshya knows for a fact that this guy really rules.Have seen him dance in hide n seek ad?, can hollywood star catch eyeballs like him in an ad.Almost everybody I spoke to remembers the ads and buys the hide n seek , eating the image of hrithks dance then biscut. He is such a huge star for <15 years that you cannot even comprehend.

One of the topmost things abt this krissh is its perhaps the first time we in bollywood are trying Superhero at this scale and gradeur, guys if this clicks and rips off box office, then imagine we will have matrix kind of special effects in bollywood movies. Then Hollywood cannot hold monopoly for special effects movies. Some part of Almost al the hollywood special effects are being done in bangalore now.

Watch out for next 5 years , krissh is the begining of special effects movies with superheros.

I've just seen the movie Krissh and I've got to hand it to the Roshan clan they've pulled this one of brilliantly. Not only was it a good story line but the way the scenes were captured in the midst of beautiful scenery were absolutely amazing. Anyone who has seen Krissh can honestly say it is not about the collaboration of stolen ideas from 'marvel classics', but it's a touching film, an all rounder family film with outstanding performances from Hrithik Roshan and the lovely Priyanka Chopra. Guys just enjoy and stop bitching about!

Hey ,

Hrithik rocks dude in the movie. Its grossed over 60 crores in the first week.Man normal collection of hit movie which runs over 100 days is considered arround 75 crores. This one made it to 60 crores in first week. And going this way perhaps the first movie which will cross over 300 crores.

And I predicted it way back, its a salute for the roshans, now its time to start ramping up media companies for full scale special effects bollywood movie.

(So let me see if I have this straight. Koi... Mil Gaya isn't a rip-off of the world famous E.T. because there's an unproduced screenplay somewhere that sort of resembles E.T.?)

Oh really, let's check the fact shall we
1)Alien Gets Lost and left behind
2)Alien heals the sick with a glowing light
3)Alien is develops a special relationship
4)Alien is hounded by the govt agencies
Still want to claim it is not a rip off.
Offcourse I forgot it not only ripped off ET, it also ripped off elements following movies
1)Spiderman
2)Space Jam
3)Forrest Gump
4)Encounter of the 3rd Kind.
5)Independence Day
The special effects and design of the alien were horrible, considering that they hired a foriegner to do it.
When Indian directors ripoff, it just shows the lack of creativity of the part of Indian directors.

(lets face it ppl hollywood is the master of rip offs )
Unlike Bollywood, Hollywood producers actually acknowledge that they are remaking a foriegn movie in their credits. If they do not, then they get sued. When was the last time a copyright in the movie and TV indrustry was respected in India?

(Anyone who has seen Krissh can honestly say it is not about the collaboration of stolen ideas from 'marvel classics',)
This time it's not from Marvel, it's DC. Read Superman.
I can't believe they actually ripped off the plot of PAYCHECK, as if Rakesh Roshan understands the concept of predestination vs freewill

My Favourite film is KRISSH.

Posted by: Waqas Ahmed | Jul 23, 2006 12:59:42 AM

Let me state first: I love Koi Mil Gaya and really liked Krrish.

However, after seeing Koi Mil Gaya, I do get the feeling that Rakesh Roshan directed the film with the intention of recreating ET, although there is little of the human-alien bonding seen in ET. And I also agree that many other scenes were inspired from other films. However, the number of movies that have been named as inspirations is a little bit excessive. I mean, for example aliens classically travel in space ships, of course they are going to be there. To claim that they are there due to rip offs from Close Encounters with the 3rd Kind is going overboard. Also, the basketball match has been called a rip off of Space Jam, simply because Jadoo's powers were utilised in a manner that appeared similar to that movie. What the hell??

I mean if you're going to claim this, then you might as well claim that countless hollywood films have stolen scenes from early times - classic ideas include: holding a gun to someone's head {recreated too many times to count}, the concept of a car chase, a long drawn out kiss with the camera focus on part of the faces and the people's meeting lips...

Hollywood the remake saints, always getting the rights to a film?? Nowadays yes, but in the past they have remade countless Asian movies without due credit given. Reservoir Dogs comes to mind, as does the Star Wars series. Don't get me wrong - in saying this I'm not trying to justify Bollywood's habit.

I also noticed that a lot of the negative feelings about the movie came from people with "western" names (not all though). Need I point out that Bollywood is a different style of cinema made for a different audience. In India, Western movies seem to have large impact when they have big stunts; however for the most part people turn them away as too "boring". Simple plots, Indian/modern values and likeable characters are what sell Indian films, in India. Which is why Koi Mil Gaya wasn't too happening overseas, although Krrish seems to be fairing otherwise.

Despite its origins, Koi Mil Gaya does not feel like a patchwork of other films, due to Hritik's spirited performance which resulted in an all out win for best actor. I don't think he quite made the cut for one this year in Krrish though - not a bad performance but lacking the pizazz of Koi Mil Gaya, and unable to compete with the likes of Aamir Khan (thus far... SRK in KANK is worth waiting for)

I have to say only one man in industry. I watch the movie 10 times.

"To claim that they are there due to rip offs from Close Encounters with the 3rd Kind is going overboard."

Have you ever seen it Close Encounters with the 3rd Kind. How do the humans communicate with the Aliens? With music. Name another science fiction movie which does that?

"Also, the basketball match has been called a rip off of Space Jam, simply because Jadoo's powers were utilised in a manner that appeared similar to that movie. "

Actually Flubber is more like it, than space jam. But yeah, kids jumping around with supernatural ability. Very original?

"holding a gun to someone's head {recreated too many times to count}, the concept of a car chase, a long drawn out kiss with the camera focus on part of the faces and the people's meeting lips...

There is difference between inspiration and plain ripping off. How many movies have you seen a guy suddenly getting his vision fix miraculsly and discovering it while standing in front of the mirror, while at the same time discovering he has muscles?

With Star Wars, George Lucas, openly admits the movie he drew inspiration from(namely the Western and Space Opera).

Rakesh Roshan cannot even come up with a original Poster for his movie. He had rip off the one from Daredevil
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krrish

"Need I point out that Bollywood is a different style of cinema made for a different audience"
No disagreement here. However Bollywood is operating on niche market, and is very unlikely to succeed on the global scale. But since Ekta Kapoor has brought the same old junk to indian television, it has definately impacted the movie indrustry. Which why Bollywood is now experimenting with other themes such as sex or action

"Despite its origins, Koi Mil Gaya does not feel like a patchwork of other films, "
Yes it is. The movie had no story in it and was all over the place. That's what happens when you rip story idea, instead of constructing a original story. And as far as cinematography is concerned....well, I lost track as to how many number of times he crossed the line?

"due to Hritik's spirited performance which resulted in an all out win for best actor"
Compare Forrest Gump/Jack and KMG and see the difference. Oh btw, what was the difference between the mental age of the 4 year old boy and Hritik?Seems like they could not imitate their "inpiration" either.

Bollywood is very capable of making fantastic and original movies. However KMG and Krissh is not one of them.
