WHICH TONY IS WHICH?

Big Tony? Or Little Tony?At Hong Kong's Filmart there was some more news about John Woo's BATTLE OF RED CLIFF as ScreenDaily reports that "...local superstar Tony Leung acknowledged that would be among the stars featured in the large-scale film."

Do they mean Big Tony? Or Little Tony? Aiyah, these Westerners need to learn that there's two Tony Leungs: one who is in Wong Kar-wai movies and one who gets arrested for drunk driving. There's Little Tony making some important looking announcements at the opening of Filmart, with skin so dewy you could make a wallet out of it. Is this the Tony they're thinking of?

Hmmm, I distinctly recall a mixup in this very column in which a photo of Tony Leung Chiu-wai accompanied an item about the drunk driving arrest and sentencing of Tony Leung Kar-fai. The error was eventually caught, with the correct Tony Leung then held up for public ridicule.

I'm just saying. . .

Ah, but Drunk Driving Tony has also been in Wong Kar Wai movies, such as ASHES OF TIME and its Bizzaro counterpart THE EAGLE SHOOTING HEROES. He was memorable in MEN SUDDENLY IN BLACK. A lot of women I know who don't follow Asian film remember him (vividly) from the French film THE LOVER. Drunk driving is not cool at all, but there's a bit more to his career than that.

Oh, I know. I just like giving big Tony a hard time. And I think it's fortunate for WKW that his onscreen counterpart has turned out to be Little Tony who apparently doesn't age but only gets more and more rugged and manly looking as time goes by.
