SPOILERS FOR THE DEPARTED

Martin Scorsese's remake of INFERNAL AFFAIRS, THE DEPARTED, hasn't even come out and we already know how it ends - which is far different from how the Hong Kong movie ends, and robs the Hong Kong version of its point. In a recent interview, Matt Damon reveals the fate of his character (he plays the Andy Lau role) when he answers the question, could there be a sequel:

"It'd be tough because [[I get shot in the face.]] Though I'm sure if it's a success Warner Brothers will find a way."

Whoops.

That renders the entire point of the movie completely, er... pointless.

The ending of The Departed doesn't "robs the Hong Kong version of its point." Check your DVDs; the Hong Kong version is completely untouched! It's still there!

If you take a moment to get past the 'All Asian films are great, All Hollywood fils are crap' attitude and read up about the Departed, you'll find out it's a completely different movie. Buying the remake rights seems to have been unecessary considering how much Scorese has changed, but that's where the project started.

Out of curiosity, IS there any information as to the changes made? I read the early 'script review' and they were mainly cosmetic ones. Scorsese's word is all well and good, but Hong Kong->Boston and Triad->Irish Mob isn't what I would describe as a radical change. In my opinion the ending is one of the most powerful aspects of the original's plot, so to make the aforementioned changes seems like an....odd choice, at the very least.

I don't know why anyone thinks this is such a big "change". I believe Leo's character is also killed in this version, i.e., they BOTH die. I also think I read that the Andy Lau character is in fact killed in one of the sequels to Infernal Affairs. The Departed is evidently telling the whole story in one film.

The envelope DiCaprio Gives to the chick...she never opens it and it is never mentioned again after his death...what the fuck was the point of it????

Remember Leo's character told her to keep it and not open it. But with him dead it's clear she must have. And we also must assume it was written the name of the rat, so logically she must have given it to the internal affairs (Mark Whalberg). But hey, they all work for the man at the end. I think it's clear.
