ELECTION 2 BROCHURES BURNED

Dave Kehr writes that a source close to ELECTION 2, now screening out of competition at Cannes, says that Mainland Chinese authorities seized and burned promotional brochures that had been prepared for Cannes. Apparently the source of the trouble was To's director's statement which compared triads to the Chinese government. You can download a pdf of the brochure here, and the text in questions is here.

(Thanks to a sharp-eyed reader and another unnamed source who confirmed this for me. It's true! It's true!)

Let's hope this news isn't followed by "Johnnie To signs up for 1st US production, Jean-Claude Van Damme to star".

Typical "Communist" Chinese government thuggery...

I have doubts about this information. The brochure is made by CELLULOID, and international sales company from France. It is likely that it has been printed in France or Europe, and I don't really see how Mainland China censorship authorities would intervene on French territory to burn up some promotionnal material. It is 1/ nearly impossible 2/and would create a war and diplomatic outburst for sure. Isn't it just marketing rumor?

Nope. The brochures were printed in China and that's where they were seized. Lots of folks outsource printing jobs to China where it's often so inexpensive to do high quality printing that even with the cost of international shipping you've still got a competitive price.
