CURSE OF THE GOLDEN FLOWER COMING TO AMERICA?
A sharp-eyed reader sends in this link to Sina.com, China's massive internet portal (like Yahoo! only in Chinese) which carries a quote from the producer of Zhang Yimou's CURSE OF THE GOLDEN FLOWER. Said producer, Zhang Weiping, says CURSE will be released in the US in December - as if Santa brought it.
Sony Pictures Classic has picked up the rights to the movie and so they seem like the best bet to release the flick in North America although they may license it to some smaller label when the time comes. It'll be interesting to see the treatment it gets after Sony's experience with HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS - will they still do a huge roll-out? Will it be in the New York Film Festival?
Whatever happens, I'm looking forward to seeing Chow Yun-fat and Gong Li on the big screen again. ANNA AND THE KING and MIAMI VICE just aren't enough for me.

"after Sony's experience with HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS"
Did HOFD not do very well for Sony? I don't think I ever heard box office or DVD sales numbers. Was it a bomb (financially) or did it just not do as well as Crouching Tiger or Hero?

As I recall, HOFD did about $11 million in the U.S. (HERO did about 50 mil and CTHD about 120 mil.) For most foreign-language imports, this would be fantastic box office. But given the relatively wide release and heavy publicity, and post-CTHD/HERO expectations, it was considered kinda disappointing, although I don't think it qualified as a "bomb."
