DHOOM 2 MAKES A MINT

DHOOM 2

You're all eager to know which Bollywood movie opened over Thanksgiving weekend, and I'm eager to tell you. DHOOM 2, the idea-free, multi-starrer (Aishwarya Rai, Abhishek Bachchan, Hrithik Roshan), cops and robbers macaroon hit screens around the world (how come Bollywood is the only industry to master the global "day and date" release business?) and sucked in massive amounts of money.

It was the number two specialty release of the weekend, racking up approx. $15,000 per screen which put it just behind VOLVER ($17,000/screen) and just ahead of HISTORY BOYS ($14,000 per screen). Even the New York Times reviewed it!

caught Dhoom 2 at the Imaginasian here in NY. I thought that the soundtrack was again front auditorium-centric. The film had a fantastic opening with Hrithik's intro and the great high energy English redo of the title track over the opening credits. Alas, my happiness was short-lived as the film then proceeded to become quite prodding and over-long. There just wasn't enough narrative to justify the running time. Plus the whole "Mission Impossible" spy thing seems to be a bit overdone by this point. The other actors were strictly working by the numbers. Still not terrible, but not quite a time pass either.
