PETER CHAN'S NEW FLICK: NOW WITH JET LI

Jet Li, Takeshi Kaneshiro and Andy Lau You know what's wrong with Peter Chan? After making some great movies like COMRADES: ALMOST A LOVE STORY (is there a more perfect romantic film?) he got caught up in business and stopped shooting films for all intents and purposes. Sure, he did PERHAPS LOVE, and the "Going Home" segment of THREE. And he produced DUMPLINGS. But that's not enough.

So now Peter Chan wants to make me happy. He's put together Jet Li, Takeshi Kaneshiro and Andy Lau and announced that he's got US$40 million in the bank to shoot CI MA ("This Violent Land") his massive, martial arts period piece. Set to be released at the end of 2007, the flick is based on a Qing Dynasty story, "The Assasination of Ma" which Chang Cheh filmed as BLOOD BROTHERS back in 1973.

Jet Li, having to live down his "I'm retiring from kung fu movies" statement used to promote FEARLESS says that this isn't a martial arts movie, it's a movie about friendship. Well if it's not a martial arts movie then what's he doing in it?

Fearless was not his last martial arts film. The western media and movie companies used the wrong explanation. It was his last wushu film, meaning his last film where he tries to explore the meaning behind wushu which quite simply is "to conquer oneself". The concept Li is referring too is sadly lost in most western martial arts schools. I think this is why it was lost on many western viewers.

Wushu meaning "war art" not in reference to competitive wushu which Li practices.

Proving to the world that he's shorter than both Andy Lau and Takeshi Kaneshiro. Duuuhhhhhh....

;P

I'd say it was more a matter of paying for that mansion with the tunnels. ;) He's practicing wushu on his bills.

Uh, excuse or explination? I didn't believe him when he said it. I do not go to his movies because of his great acting skills. I go becuase I want to see him in "action". He is in movies because of his "martial arts" skills. You can call it wu shu, kung fu or friendship. It all boils down to the same thing ... he is still "fighting" in movies. If it's worth seeing, yea for those of us who like those types of films.
