THE MYTH SOLD TO US DISTRIBUTOR
Over on his obsessive compulsive diary, Jackie Chan reveals that THE MYTH has been picked up by a US distributor who plan a theatrical release in 2007. He's been recording the English dub track (which he hates doing) and he had a really bad dinner. Then comes one of the most insightful posts of his career, which might explain why he hasn't given a lot of support to DVDs of his movies:
"I worked so fast yesterday that I was able to finish early. I was really happy that I was done. Since there was still time, they asked me to do a commentary on the entire film for the DVD. Ugggh!! I didn’t really want to do it because I’ve already seen the film over a thousand times. Now I had to sit there, watch it and talk about it."
But then he tries the commentary and lo and behold!
"As soon as I started doing it, believe it or not, I had a lot of fun. Talking about the film brought back so many good memories of making the film. I felt really comfortable, as if I was sharing stories with my friends."
Too bad he didn't learn this until the end of 2006.
By the way: English dub track? "Let's just record an audio commentary real quick, k?" Does this smell like a straight-to-video release to anyone else?

I rather enjoyed it, but hey, I'd line up to watch Jackie read a newspaper.
I'm kinda surprised. Who the bought a VERY Chinese centric, R-rated Jackie Chan film? Unless its hacked to where it's beyond recognizable (Weinstien Co probably) I couldn't imagine it being appealing to any mainstream or niche theatrical audience in America.
Direct to video for sure. Still a nice surprise though. Now when is somebody going to pull the trigger on Rob-B-Hood?

The Myth was pretty bad though. Not Medallion bad, but bad nonetheless. Rob-b-hood was a little better, but still, he's a long way from Police Story 3.

Nah... :)
If an English dub is done well I like to listen to it. ;)
But I do feel it's a shame he doesn't do audio commentaries. About the only one I think he has ever done for any of his HK films was for Gorgeous which was frustrating to listen to since he was doing it in English.

I thought The Myth was quite good. It doesn't have the most amazing story in the world, but it does alot of things right that i don't think many other films do. First and foremost it has some of the coolest weapons based fighting in any film. I can't think of any recent ones that compare. Also, its visual depiction of the China dynasty is fairly accurate. It's nice to see a Chinese period piece with solid swords and armour which is closer to history than the usual floppy swords and robes of most period pieces.
I guess the story might come off as a bit cheesy or melodramatic (especially considering the restrictive R rating the film will recieve in the States for violence), but I thought that Jackie Chan is charming enough to make it all work. He's still got his incredible physical presence, and he's so lovable as an actor that i always empathize with him.
