COMPARE AND CONTRAST: NEW VS. OLD SASSY GIRL

Stills are starting to leak off the set of the American remake of Korean box office hit MY SASSY GIRL. First, a shot from the original starring Jeon Ji-Hyun. Second, similar shot starring HOUSE OF WAX/24 starlette Elisha Cuthbert. You be the judge.

Is that New York that they're filming the remake in?

And who's starring as the boy?

Jesse Bradford. The kid that was in Swim Fan and Flags of our Fathers.

Yes, it's NYC. At least that's what IMDB says. From Gold Circle, the production company named after the worst condoms on the market, who also brought us WHITE NOISE.

I see this scene of poor boy carrying drunk girl on back being copied in Korean TV series too, in My Name is Kim Sam Soon from 2005 and last years drama The Snow Queen, to name a few..

"Jesse Bradford. The kid that was in Swim Fan and Flags of our Fathers."

You mean Jessie Bradford of Hackers fame, surely. This is going to end up being a throwaway date movie in America like Il Mare became. Still sucks that they're actually doing it. Hopefully Oldboy stays in development hell.

omg. First Il Mare... and now this? Can't Hollywood even stick to ruining their own movies now? *sigh*

The original was a cute story. If only they'd use better stars, the remake might've gone somewhere.

Miriam Yeung voices the cantonese dub on My Sassy Girl (obviously for the girl). Other than the fact that the film's best when viewed with original Korean audio track, Miriam totally ruins the film. She doesn't sound like a pretty, young thing...at all.

Let's not forget the American JSA remake by the writer of GLADIATOR, also apparently (hopefully) stuck in development hell, and for my money the most ridiculous idea for a remake out of the bunch, since the whole story is inherently Korean and can't possibly "relocate" to the US/Mexico border, as was apparently the plan. SASSY GIRL, OLDBOY... sure, these remakes are going to suck, but they're at least plausible remakes, stories that could theoretically happen in other settings. JSA's setting is a huge part of the story.

Now if the US remake of JSA was a "parallel universe" story, set in a world where the American Civil War ended in a drastically prolonged ceasefire that continues to this day, rather than in victory for the Northern states... then you'd be on to something. That is a movie I'd actually be interested in seeing.

I don't even think that 'Il Mare' is that good a movie, and Lake House being any much worse than it. At least the latter has Keanu emoting. That's the coolest thing ever.
