OSCAR SHORTLIST ANNOUNCED

The shortlist for "Best Film in a Foreign Language" nominees has been announced by the Academy and the world couldn't care less. The nominees who made it this far without being voted off the island are:

Deepa Mehta's WATER

Because we only care about Asian films round here.

I don't know why after all these years I still expect more from the Academy Awards but the Euro-centric foreign film nominees always depress me. Just look at this list: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academy_Award_for_Best_Foreign_Language_Film
I know that many of the nominated films deserve accolades but it looks to the untrained eye as if there are only a few countries that produce worthwhile film. After being lucky enough to see a screening of South Korean Oscar nominee hopeful THE KING AND THE CLOWN last week I knew that the best film I'd seen in years would never make the short list of "important" (read European or European film inspired) nominees.
